The Bible Engagement Project: A Case Study in Visual Innovation for Kids Ministry

The landscape of children’s ministry is rapidly evolving, with today’s Generation Alpha being true digital natives who can recognize quality content within seconds. This reality prompted the Assemblies of God’s National Children’s Ministries team to reimagine their approach to curriculum design, particularly in their Bible Engagement Project (BEP).

Carl Barnhill recently sat down with Julie on our Your Visuals Matter Podcast to discuss how the Church Visuals team has helped reimagine the Bible Engagement Project Curriculum.

The Challenge: Elevating Visual Content

Julie Pratt, National Children’s Ministries Discipleship Director for the Assemblies of God, recognized that while BEP’s teaching content was strong, there was a significant opportunity to enhance its visual elements. “We had some basic media components – a teaching video and static slides for Bible verses or teaching points,” Pratt explains. “But we weren’t hitting the mark on visual elements that would make our curriculum truly excellent.”

The team knew they needed to create a comprehensive media package that would serve churches of all sizes – from the 50-person congregation to the multi-site megachurch. However, with their internal design team already at capacity serving multiple departments, they needed a partner who could deliver high-quality custom content at scale.

The Solution: Partnership with Church Visuals

The Assemblies of God team chose to partner with Church Visuals to create custom media content for BEP. This partnership resulted in the creation of approximately 750 individual media pieces across 10 months of curriculum content.

The comprehensive package included:

  • Themed series artwork for each lesson.
  • Countdown Timer Videos.
  • Motion graphics and animation videos.
  • Still slides and Social Media Graphics.
  • Poster Designs.

“We wanted it to be fun and bright,” Pratt shares. “We wanted to look at it and say, ‘Oh my goodness, that is so great.’ The fresh eye and voice of outsourcing it and specifically custom designing it has made all the difference.”

The Process: Collaborative Creation

It has been a creative collaboration between our Church Visuals Team and the Assemblies of God’s National Children’s Ministries team to bring the Bible Engagement Project Curriculum to life. Here’s what some of the creative process has looked like:

  • Initial strategic discussions about teaching content direction.
  • Multiple design concept presentations.
  • Rapid revision cycles (typically 1-2 rounds per piece).
  • Quick turnaround times (often within 1-2 days).
  • Organized project management through a dashboard system.
  • Regular benchmark check-ins.

The Impact: Enhanced Learning and Engagement

The enhanced media content has already made a significant impact in churches using BEP. Pratt shares feedback from one volunteer leader who noted, “The media helps these kids to understand the Bible application with so much depth.” This observation perfectly aligns with the project’s goal – using quality media to help children better engage with and understand God’s Word.

Another leader, experienced with media-rich curricula, regularly comments on how “next level” the content is, particularly appreciating how even small elements are animated to create an engaging environment for kids’ church.

The Takeaway: Why Quality Media Matters

We believe that a piece of the success of this partnership is – when excellent biblical content combines with high-quality visual media, the impact multiplies. As Pratt explains, “Memorable is portable.” Just as Jesus used stories and object lessons to make truth memorable, today’s ministry leaders can use quality media to help children connect with and internalize biblical truths.

For curriculum providers considering similar enhancements to their content, the BEP case study demonstrates that investing in custom media can:

  • Increase engagement with the material.
  • Enhance learning retention.
  • Create more immersive teaching environments.
  • Better serve churches of varying sizes and resources.
  • Provide consistent quality across all program elements.

When choosing between creating content in-house or partnering with a specialized team, Pratt advises considering factors like team capacity, technical expertise needed (especially for specialized skills like motion graphics), and the scope of the project. For BEP, the partnership with Church Visuals has proven to be a strategic decision that’s helping them achieve their ultimate goal: creating disciples who make disciples.

The Bible Engagement Project stands as a testament to how intentional investment in quality media can enhance curriculum effectiveness and, ultimately, help communicate the gospel more effectively to the next generation.

No church should have to compromise on discipleship.

Bible Engagement Project is on a mission to make disciples by providing every church, regardless of size, location, or budget with resources that transform lives and help people engage the Bible.
