Starting from Scratch with your Visuals

Starting from Scratch with your Visuals

Carl Barnhill

In today’s digital age, the way we communicate has drastically evolved, and the church is no exception. Visual media has become an essential tool for effectively sharing the Gospel and engaging congregations.

Our culture is increasingly visual. According to data from Statista, nearly 3.5 billion internet users watched, streamed, or downloaded video content at least once per month in 2023. This trend is projected to grow annually.

In the last quarter of 2022, online videos reached 91.8% of internet users worldwide, and 82% of global internet traffic came from video content. These statistics highlight a significant shift in how people consume information and entertainment.

For churches aiming to reach young families, students, and college-aged individuals, visual media is not just an option; it’s a necessity.

Families with young children are less likely to attend or stay at a church that lacks engaging visual media. This is because screens and videos are integral parts of their daily lives, from educational content to entertainment.

So what if your church doesn’t even have screens?

The first step is to determine the “why” behind the need for visual media. Understanding the purpose—whether it’s to enhance worship, improve children’s ministry, or make sermons more engaging—helps in making informed decisions about what equipment to invest in.

If budget constraints are a concern, starting small is perfectly acceptable. You may ask congregation members if they have spare TVs that could be donated or purchased at a low cost. For those needing projectors, affordable options are available on platforms like Amazon. While these may not be top-of-the-line, they can serve as a starting point.

Fundraising and Community Support

For churches with limited budgets, fundraising can be an effective way to gather the necessary funds. Car washes, bake sales, and partnerships with local businesses can provide financial support. Engaging the community in these efforts not only raises funds but also builds relationships and opens doors for outreach.

Choosing the Right Equipment

When it comes to computers, starting with a personal laptop is an option, but it’s advisable to eventually invest in a dedicated machine. A laptop in the $500 range, such as those from Asus, can be a good starting point. For more robust needs, an iMac, though more expensive, offers reliability and longevity.

For projectors and screens, consulting with technical experts within the church or reaching out to specialized companies like All Pro Systems, CCI Solutions, or B&H Video can provide valuable guidance. These companies can help with everything from selecting the right equipment to installation.

Legal and Quality Considerations

One important caution for those starting from scratch is the use of YouTube for showing videos in church. While YouTube is a great resource for learning and training, using it to broadcast content can lead to issues with ads and licensing. Instead, churches should look affordable low cost solutions like the Ready-Made Library at Church Visuals.

Quality matters

While churches may not be able to compete with the production quality of companies like Disney or Marvel, they should strive for the best quality within their means. High-quality visuals can make a significant difference in how the message is received and can help in making a positive first impression on newcomers.

Embracing the Future

Visuals matter. In a world where screens dominate our attention, the church must adapt to effectively communicate the timeless message of the Gospel. By investing in visual media, churches can create engaging environments that resonate with today’s culture, ultimately drawing more people to Christ.

Integrating visual media into your church is not just about keeping up with the times; it’s about leveraging the tools available to us to spread the Gospel more effectively. Whether starting small or making significant investments, the goal remains the same: to reach people for Jesus in the most engaging and impactful way possible.
